5 Reasons To Be Thankful For The Oceans

From the air we breathe, to the fish that nourish us, and the extraordinary creatures that inspire us, our oceans give us so much to be thankful for.

As the season of gratitude begins, here are our top 5 reasons to be thankful for the oceans.

5 REASONS TO BE THANKFUL FOR THE OCEANS

  1. One reason to be grateful for our oceans is perhaps the most simple: our oceans impact the very air we breathe. Scientists estimate our oceans produce more than 50% of the oxygen on Earth, thanks to oceanic plankton. Just like plants on land, these microscopic organisms photosynthesize and transform sunlight and carbon dioxide into oxygen.
  2. The oceans are Earth’s largest unexplored frontier. Despite covering over 70% of the Earth’s surface, most of the ocean remains unexplored and unmapped. The ocean holds the potential for groundbreaking discoveries from unheard of species to never-before-studied natural compounds that could have larger societal impacts, such as in medicine.
  3. Our oceans contain surprises: like the world’s longest mountain range! Most people don’t know it exists, but the ocean is home to the mid-ocean range, which stretches for about 40,000 miles – further than any mountain range on land. Fun fact: Iceland sits directly on the ridge, which is why it’s known for volcanic activity and stunning geothermal features.
  4. Our oceans can give us incredible recreational experiences such as diving in underwater caves, like Mexico’s cenotes. Akin to a natural cathedral, these cave systems feature grandiose stalactites alongside both fresh and saltwater layers. These caves offer an otherworldly experience of observing thrilling marine life and geology in a natural setting!
  5. The ocean is home to fascinating creatures. One such creature is the mimic octopus. We all know octopuses are masters of disguise, but the mimic octopus takes it to the next level. It can contort its body to mimic other animals like flounders and sea snakes, among other possible species.

What is Lorem Ipsum? Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. Why do we use it? It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).
